Gums, lips or the roof of the mouth is typically where cold sores appear. Caused by the herpes simplex virus, cold sores are contagious fluid-filled blisters. They are small but often painful. A sign that a cold sore is about to erupt may be tingling or pain in the location where it will eventually occur. It can take up to 10 days for it to work its course.

Canker sores and cold sores are sometimes confused with one another. The difference is that canker sores are not contagious while cold sores are. Home remedies for cold sores can be quite effective and provide relief from the pain and blistered eruptions.

The following remedies are readily available in drug stores, health food stores and even some supermarkets.

Lysine – since our bodies cannot produce it on its own, this amino acid is essential. In order to get it, we must take a supplement or eat foods that contain it. When lysine is introduced, the herpes simplex virus has been shown to stop spreading. The following foods contain lysine: eggs, cheese, milk, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, fish and red meat. Do not take the amino acid arginine while taking lysine. They compete with one another for absorption in the intestines. More lysine is absorbed when there is less arginine present. Foods that contain arginine are peanuts, chocolate, and almonds. Avoid these foods when fighting a cold sore with lysine.

Lemon Balm – the antiviral properties in lemon balm have been found to assist with the process of healing the blisters associated with a cold sore. When taken regularly, lemon balm can reduce the chance for recurrences.

Reishi – this mushroom with a strong history in Asian medicine is known to make the immune system stronger. It can be taken up to twice daily in dosages of 600 milligram. It can be found in supplement or powder form. When taken for cold sores, it has been shown to stop the spread of the herpes virus.

Resveratrol – touted for more and more health benefits, resvertrol is derived from red grapes. A cream containing resveratrol that is topically applied to the eruption no more than 6 hours after it appears will help it to heal.

Peppermint Oil – effectively works against the herpes simplex virus. This essential oil is found in tinctures or ointments. It is also helpful to dab the blisters with a used peppermint tea bag that has been cooled. This will soothe the area and promote healing.

Propolis – found in the buds of the conifer and poplar trees, it is collected by bees and used to keep their hives sterile and as a “glue” to hold them together. Look for propolis in health food stores.

Self-Heal – the extracts of this perennial plant have been shown to be effective against the herpes simplex 1 and 2 viruses.

A cold sore remedy that is natural and effective will help to promote healing and relieve the pain and discomfort you may experience when fighting an eruption.
