Using a good quality toothbrush and toothpaste can help keep your smile bright!

When we talk about dental care many people think about that trip to the dentists every 6 months. You DO go to the dentist regularly don’t you? OK, may of us don’t because of the time involved or expense. The second best way to protect your teeth is to follow a regular dental care regimen at home. This would include not only brushing your teeth with a quality toothbrush but also using some type of dentifrice or toothpaste and regular use of dental floss. Flossing is probably the least used but most effective way to clean areas of your teeth that cannot be reached with brushing alone.

Toothpaste is a paste used, almost always in conjunction with a tooth brush, to clean teeth. Good oral hygiene demands consistent brushing on a daily basis preferably after each meal. The first reference to toothpaste was found believe it or not in Egyptian writings. Toothpaste back then was probably a mixture of spices like sale and peppermint and probably some herbs. Although not exactly our idea of good tasting, it was most likely very effective for keeping down the decaying food particles and was considered good basic dental care of the day.

In the late 1800’s, toothpaste and dental care become a growth industry for many smaller companies. Oral hygiene of the day was a mixture of chalk and various salts designed more as an abrasive to scrape off plaque than make your mouth clean. We now know that these types of toothpastes or powders actually damaged teeth because of the abrasive nature of the ingredients. The abrasiveness scraped and damaged the enamel coating that protected teeth and left them more vulnerable to decay and plaque build up.

By 1900, baking soda made it’s way into commercial toothpaste products along with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide solution. This was probably the very beginnings of teeth whitening products for the mass market. Although actual tooth cleaning pastes were first marketed in the 19th century, it was not very popular until the mid 1900’s. The Colgate & Company manufactured toothpaste in the first collapsible tube, similar to the tubes we use today. These were actually the first products that had the basic compounds to brighten and whiten teethHydrogen peroxide, although in higher concentrations is being used today to remove staining and whiten teeth. Although tooth powders, a pre cursor product to toothpaste didn’t show up on the market until this time, it wasn’t until the mid 1950-1960 that modern toothpaste that we recognize became the teeth cleaner of choice.

Fluoride started to be added to toothpastes in the 1950 and 1960’s. Fluoride is still controversial due to the claimed “dangers” of anything chemical. Although fluoride is not good for people in large quantities, it’s a fact that as fluoride has been added to the nations water supply, the number of cavities in children has dropped dramatically. Of course, there’s little doubt that fluoride has been instrumental in lowering the number of dental cavities.

Like many shampoos, healthier ingredients (such as baking soda, pseudo-mouthwash etc) are often combined into base mixes of varying qualities and marketed as being beneficial. Toothpaste is most commonly sold in flexible tubes, although one may also purchase it in hard plastic containers with pumps. Packages designed to stand straight up, so as to allow more of the toothpaste to be used, are a relatively recent innovation. You only need a little toothpaste to get the job done however. Remember that the toothpaste manufacturers have an interest in getting you to overuse their product, making more purchases likely. A pea sized amount is more than enough to do a good job brushing your teeth.

Toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors, with those marketed to kids! Tasting like orange, cinnamon and bubblegum. Taste has nothing to do with the quality of the product however but may get some people and children to brush longer. So for a good brushing, use a quality toothpaste and soft bristle brush. Your teeth and gums will thank you!

Dental care is an important part of caring for your pet. Just like humans – dogs have teeth that can cause problems if they are not cared for with a proper dental routine. You may have already noticed, but dogs can suffer from bad breath just like humans can.

Your vet is an important part of this dental care. Ask your vet to show you how to brush your pets’ teeth properly. Your vet knows how to brush their teeth properly so your beloved pet doesn’t get gum disease or any of the other conditions associated with poor oral hygiene.

You are going to need to spend some time finding the right toothbrush for your dog. You can use a child’s toothbrush – but it is recommended that you rather buy a special toothbrush for your pet. It will make brushing easier and will be worth the money.

To buy a toothbrush you can visit your vet or local pet supply store. You might be surprised to see how many variations of pet toothbrushes and toothpaste’s there are. Rather ask for help if you are not sure about what kind to get. There are some rules for choosing the best brush for your dog. You need to make sure that the bristles are soft so they don’t damage the dog’s gums. You also need to make sure you choose the right sized brush (just make sure its’ not too big or too small for your dogs mouth). Lastly check that the handle is big enough for you to comfortably get a grip on the toothbrush.

You cannot use human toothpaste on your dog. Rather use a special high quality toothpaste with ingredients specially formulated for dogs. You need to spend some time choosing your toothpaste too. Cheaper brands might use ingredients that are harmful to your pet, and there are some common ingredients can make your pet sick. Read the labels carefully and check that the toothpaste does not contain salt, detergents or enzymes as these are dangerous for your pet. There is a huge choice at most pet supply store’s so ask for help and read the labels carefully.

Brushing your dogs’ teeth for the first time can be difficult; especially if they are not used to it. This can be avoided by starting when they are puppies – but if it’s too late for that don’t worry. The key is to be gentle, speak in a soft voice and do not force the dog. He must learn that it is not a big deal. Start from the back of the mouth and work your way forward in small circular motions.

If your dog really does not want to allow you to brush his teeth without a fight you can use a towel first. Try rubbing his teeth so he gets used to the sensation as well as your fingers in his mouth. Speak encouragingly and softly; you can even sing a little tune to calm him down. After a few patient weeks the dog should allow you to brush his teeth without any hassles.

You should be brushing your dogs’ teeth daily; but if you can’t manage that – once every second day should be fine. It’s important that you start too see your dogs mouth as your own. By doing this you will ensure that your dogs’ teeth will last well into old age; and of course his dog breath will improve.

Cleaning and checkup: Your regular polish and scale will keep your teeth looking their best, find problems when they are more easily treated, and prevent many major dental issues.

Problems don’t go away or heal: Dental problems are the kind of problems that just don’t go away on their own. Rotting teeth with cavities are just going to keep getting worse. Get them taken care of!

Bad breath: Does this one really need to be explained? Dental cleanings, treating any decay or problem in your teeth, and good dental hygiene can help.

Oral cancer screenings: Oral cancers are highly treatable and curable with early detection. Your dentist is probably the most likely person to notice any unusual symptoms in your mouth or throat, probably long before they become a problem that you might notice yourself.

Periodontal Disease: Gum disease can lead to a host of other health problems, including tooth loss, bone loss, heart problems, and diabetes.

It’s not so bad: While you’re getting those problems fixed, you should know that often a root canal sounds a lot worse than it is. Many people have reported that the relief they get from a root canal far outweighs any temporary discomfort from the procedure.

Change toothbrush: When you visit your dentist regularly, he or she will give you a new toothbrush! Who doesn’t love something for free? And, changing your toothbrush regularly is important to combat germs and make sure your brush is as effective as possible.

All of these reasons only lead to one thing—more reasons to smile. If you cannot find affordable, quality dental care nearby, it’s time to consider dental tourism.

As a parent, you have a big role to play in keeping your child’s teeth healthy and clean. You can help prevent cavities. Prevention starts at home, with good eating habits and daily cleaning of the teeth.

This section has important information on how to properly care for primary teeth and new permanent teeth.

Here’s a great story about some large companies giving back to their communities – and it even appears as though there is some sincerity behind their actions.

Carissa Wyant, of the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reported that several Minnesota companies have recently partnered with the Minnesota Dental Association to provide free dental care to needy kids. The “Give Kids a Smile” program, as it is known, is a partnership between HealthPartners, Patterson Dental, 3M’s Espe Dental Products division and the Minnesota Dental Association Foundation.

Healthy teeth are important to your child’s overall health. From the time your child is born, there are things you can do to promote healthy teeth. For babies, you should clean teeth with a soft, clean cloth or baby’s toothbrush. Avoid putting the baby to bed with a bottle and check teeth regularly for spots or stains.

There are 9 Golden Rules to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

1.Schedule your child’s first trip to the dentist by the time he or she is one year old.

2.Use a child size toothbrush with soft bristles. Replace the toothbrush every three months

3.Select a fluoride toothpaste and use a pea-sized amount on the toothbrush after every meal and before bed. If the child swallows the toothpaste this small amount should not hurt him

4.Once all primary teeth are in, begin flossing your child’s teeth. When the child is ready, teach him or her to floss before brushing.

5. Eat foods that have vitamins and minerals.

6. Don’t eat sweet or starchy foods between meals.

7. After every meal, brush your teeth. (Your brush downwards on upper teeth, upwards on lower teeth, back and forth on chewing surfaces.

8. Use trusted dental aids.

9. Visit your dental Surgeon at least twice a year.

What can damage my child’s teeth?

Many children fall over and bump their teeth accidentally. This is usually unavoidable and you should take them to the nearest dentist or Accident and Emergency department for treatment.

However, tooth decay (dental caries) and dental erosion are two common causes of damage to children’s teeth that can be avoided.

Treatment

Regular trips to the dentist and proper tooth brushing are the most important parts of looking after your children’s teeth.

Other treatments you may come across include:

Dental X-rays. These are used to show the development of teeth that are still hidden inside the mouth, to check for cracks in the teeth, and to make sure they are properly lined up.

Fissure sealants. The biting edge of your teeth, especially your back teeth (molars), have a very uneven surface. It is easy for tiny amounts of food to get trapped in the tiny dents or fissures, and if you do not brush them thoroughly, bacteria can build up and start to decay the tooth. Your dentist may recommend that some of your teeth should be given a coating to seal or close up the fissures, to prevent this. It is a quick and painless procedure, similar to applying a coat of varnish, and may sometimes be done as part of your routine dental check up.

All dental plans charge a membership fee, with the amount varying from one plan to the other. Dental plans are offered to either individuals or to the whole family, with family dental plans usually offering bigger discounts than individual dental plans. You should compare the rates charged under the different plans before selecting the most appropriate one for you.

It is important also to know the type of dental services covered by your dental plan. Routine dental check ups and dental treatments such as oral examination, teeth cleaning, fluoride treatment, teeth filling and teeth extraction are generally covered by most dental plans. However, dental plans do not always cover major dental care treatments such as oral surgery, dental implants, restorative care, braces, root canal treatments etc. In case of such costly dental procedures you unfortunately have to foot the bill yourself. Often there are a number of alternative treatments available for certain dental problems. Under such circumstances dental plans allow reimbursement for the cost of the basic dental treatment, and further costs in excess of the basic treatment cost has to be covered by the patient.

Dental health plans may or may not allow you to choose your own dentist, but it is common practice for patients to generally receive dental care from dentists mentioned in the plan. Before choosing a plan make sure that the participating dentists practice in your area. Choose a plan that is accepted nationwide and not restricted to your state. Check whether you are allowed to visit the dentist unscheduled, or at scheduled hours only.

You also need to decide whether you want an annual plan or a monthly plan. Annual dental plans are more cost beneficial than monthly plans. So get regular check ups with your dentist to reap the maximum benefits out of your dental plan.
