Children are like sponges and soak up anything and everything when they are learning in their early years. Aromatherapy is a perfect choice for children. Essential oils are very versatile and with just a few good choices, you have nearly any situation covered. With some simple little recipes you can assist your child to heal emotionally, physically or intellectually as the oils work to harmonize the body on all levels. Teaching your child at a young age to respect essential oils and to recognize they can use them to assist with their well being is doing your child a great service.
There are many pills, potions and medications on the supermarket or chemist shelf that are readily available without prescription. Surely it is far preferable to teach your children that they can reach for an essential oil instead which will assist gently yet effectively and won’t invade their bodies with chemicals. Essential oils can be very soothing and healing with their beautiful, aromatic scents.
Some simple ideas could be as follows:
To assist with studying or needing a clear head, choose from Lemon, Black Pepper, Rosemary, or Basil.
Two of the more common oils are lavender and tea tree.
Lavender can be used to assist with sleeping in conjunction with frankincense, or used on cuts or other injuries or skin conditions.
Tea tree is great for applying to cuts and sores to avoid infection. A drop on a cotton bud and then applied to the outer ear each day can also assist with keeping colds away.
Lavender and tea tree can also be used together for insect bites.
A drop of tea tree or frankincense applied to a pimple will dry it up very quickly.
If a child needs cheering up, citrus oils in particular are great – lemon, orange, mandarin and grapefruit. You could also mix in a little ylang ylang or geranium.
It is very important to remember that pure essential oils are therapeutic by nature, and if your child has any pre-existing conditions or illnesses, you should always check with your doctor or a qualified aromatherapist first. Always err on the side of caution.
Young children, in particular, should also have lower dosage levels of oils. It is a good idea to mix a larger amount of oils as a blend, and then administer the drops from the blend rather than individually from the oils.
If you teach your children to respect aromatherapy and the oils, they will have many wonderful years of aromatic interaction!
